About American Village
American Village is a living history museum and educational nonprofit dedicated to preserving and promoting the founding ideals of the United States through immersive, first-person historical interpretation. Situated on a 188-acre campus in Montevallo, Alabama, the Village brings the stories of the colonial and Revolutionary eras to life with costumed interpreters, authentic settings, and engaging, hands-on experiences. Visitors of all ages explore the principles of liberty, civic responsibility, and self-government that shaped the nation while interacting with historical figures and events in a dynamic, memorable environment.
As a cornerstone of civic education in the Southeast, American Village serves students, families, educators, and civic groups through a wide range of programs, events, and year-round offerings. From curriculum-based school experiences and public festivals to special performances and commemorative celebrations, every visit is designed to inspire informed and engaged citizenship.
Alabama’s Semiquincentennial Celebration Capitol
In recognition of its mission and impact, American Village has been designated as the official Semiquincentennial Celebration Capitol for the State of Alabama—a central venue for commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026. As the host site for Alabama’s celebration activities, the Village plays a leading role in statewide programming and educational initiatives tied to this historic milestone. This designation highlights American Village’s unique capacity to connect communities with America’s founding legacy and underscores its role as a vibrant focal point for reflection, celebration, and civic engagement in the lead-up to the nation’s Semiquincentennial.
